South Bay Filmmakers - September 2010 Meetup

South Bay Filmmakers next Meetup starts at 7:00 PM and ends at 10:00 PM. We start on-time and lock the doors when the last person leaves.

I am very excited to announce our upcoming guests. This Meetup is a must-see if you're serious about your career and the entertainment industry in South Bay.

If you've been "on the fence" about attending a Meetup this is one to come out for.

Guest Speakers

Our guest speaker is Erik Bork, an Emmy-winning writer-producer. His website says it best:

I’m a professional screenwriter and producer best known for my work on the HBO miniseries BAND OF BROTHERS and FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, for which I wrote multiple episodes, and won two Emmy and two Golden Globe Awards for helping to produce.

I’ve also sold four original drama series pitches (to NBC and Fox), and worked on the writing staff of two primetime drama series. I’ve written feature screenplays on assignment for Universal, HBO, TNT, and Playtone (Tom Hanks), and have been employed as a writer by Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, 20th Century-Fox, Imagine Entertainment, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jersey Films, Original Film (Neil Moritz) and Dutch Oven (Doug Liman).

I got my start as an assistant to Tom Hanks, who gave me the opportunity to help him write and produce FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, after reading some sitcom spec scripts I had written.

Our other guest speaker is Steven Ramskill, Senior Manager for ArcLight Cinemas. As you may know the Pacific Theaters on Nash and Rosecrans in El Segundo is undergoing conversion to an ArcLight which will make it "the" place for cinemaphiles. Steven will speak about the ArcLight experience, theater conversion, grand opening plans, and answer questions.

I want to say thanks to Eric for once again making this all possible and to our wonderful speakers from ArcLight, Pro8mm and especially Erik Bork who shared his humor, insights, wisdom and story with us. Finally I want to thank the members who attended because it is you that keeps our group growing and going and a valuable asset to the film community in both the South Bay and in the industry.

The highlight of the evening was Erik Bork's talk regarding his personal path into the screenwriting trade. I enjoyed his casual delivery style as he shared his experiences with the group. Due to my work, it's hard for me to attend sometimes, but I want to say thanks again to Eric Brodeur for his many efforts in putting these meetings together. Terry Morris

Very good meeting. As always, a good mix of attendees with a variety of skills and interests related to film. Eric Bork's talk on the evolution of his writing career was both entertaining and informative. Much useful information was provided, including a Q & A. The management of the new Arclight Cinemas opening up in El Segundo gav eus an overview of what to expect from their new location, and gave us samples of the caramel corn to try out. A great opportunity to meet with other filmmakers and to exchange information, stories, or even seek out specialized help on your projects.

When you're busy, when you're tired, or when there is traffic, this group is still worth the effort and time investment. Excellent meeting organization (thanks, Alison and Eric), outstanding speakers, and inspiring group members. If you haven't joined this group, you're definitely missing out.
